Betsy Johnson is a Boston-area veterinarian who, after working in general practices for years, started a solo practice specialized only on administering at-home euthanasia for pets. A Good Death follows her through her work and unique attitude towards death and end-of-life care — for both animals and humans. The film was shot and edited in the 2026 spring semester for a Documentary Video Journalism class at Emerson College.
With this documentary we hope to offer a conversation about death that is not often portrayed in the media — one that doesn’t shy away from the difficulty of loss and aging and highlights the importance of personal dignity and autonomy at the end of life.
